Indian Baby Shower

A baby shower is a common tradition in almost every culture around the globe having a different name but the same joy and excitement. Indian baby shower is known as "Godh Bharai" meaning the lap is being filled. Hindus considered addition of a baby to their household as a sign of wealth and therefore they celebrated this occasion with zest and happiness. Also, the family members including uncle, aunt, grandmother, and grandfather of the baby make every effort to bring a smile to the expectant mom's face and fulfill her desires.

This occasion is also a way to receive baby gifts beforehand so that the parents-to-be are well prepared for the baby's arrival. Often the first-time parents are not aware what things to buy and what will be useful for their baby, so baby shower or godh bharai lifts this burden off their shoulders and allows them to relax.

Hindu baby shower comprises of three stages: Pumsavanam, Valai-Kaappu, and Seemantonnayanam. The first stage is celebrated in the third month of pregnancy and the parents pray for a son so that he would support them economically in the future. During this stage, the fathers grow a beard to express that they are aware of the pains and discomfort their wife is feeling at this time.

The second stage is celebrated like a function in which the expectant mom's hands and legs are decorated with henna designs and she wears new clothes. Guests arrive with all sorts of flavorful dishes and sweets which are tied up with the "pallu" or end of the mom's saari.

The third stage is celebrated in the second or third trimester. Usually music is played on this occasion and the guests bless the parents with invocations for protection and safety.
